Choshu Dori are raised along the Fukawa River in Yamaguchi prefecture of Japan. Grown in a free open area the health of the chickens are of the farmers paramount concern; not only are they given the proper amount of space to roam freely, their diet is built to make sure there is no need for antibiotics. The farmers feed the chickens what they call the Five Herbs.
Why Five Herbs?
Chickens are delicate and sensitive creatures that are easily influenced by their environment. To raise them without relying on antibiotics or synthetic antimicrobials in their feed, it is necessary to raise healthy and disease-resistant chickens.
Therefore, while adhering to the theme of 'safety and peace of mind' of Nagasaki Jidori, the producers focused on raising chickens in a healthy manner, and turned their attention to the reputedly medicinal 'five herbs' (thyme, sage, rosemary, laurel, oregano).
The Choshu Dori producers blend the five herbs (thyme, sage, rosemary, laurel, oregano) into the feed, with the expectation not only of raising healthy chickens but also of enhancing the flavor of the meat.
About the producer
Choshu Dori originates mainly from the area near Nagato City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, where agriculture and fishing are thriving. Nagato City is a region surrounded by the sea and mountains, allowing people to feel close to nature, where the leisurely flow of time provides peace and tranquility to the mind.
In such an environment, Choshu Dori is raised in a stress-resistant free-range environment. Free-range farming is an essential element for raising healthy chickens.
By allowing the chickens to roam freely inside the chicken coop, they are raised in an environment that allows them to move around freely and minimizes stress.
Moreover, the farming region is located in a unique environment surrounded by the Chugoku Mountains. Due to the absence of competitors in the area, Fukawa Poultry has established its own unique production and disease prevention system.
