One And Only

The Sashiko dishcloths produced by 'Kohbo Rainbow and Dream (工房・虹と夢)' are vibrantly stitched, with each one standing as a singular work of art. From the intricate dot patterns, to the thoughtful color selections, meticulous ironing, careful wrapping, and detailed titling - every step is executed with the utmost care and attention.

Even when replicating the same Sashiko pattern, the variations in thread colors result in strikingly different impressions - a distinctive trademark of the Sashiko creations from Rainbow and Dream.

Please explore the selection and discover your own personal favorite dishcloth.
Each title card is tied with thread that matches the Sashiko stitching, allowing the cards to double as functional bookmarks as well as descriptive labels.

What is Sashiko (刺し子)?

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese needlework technique where the fabric is stitched with great care, stitch by stitch. Originally, it was used to reinforce or layer fabric to provide warmth.

Today, the traditional Japanese craft of "Sashiko" with its diverse colors and patterns continues to be cherished.

While some may feel it is too precious to use, this textile was meant to be used! Start by displaying it or using it to wrap items, to showcase the beautiful color combinations and patterns.

As the fabric ages and the colors fade, you can then begin using it for more practical purposes. Drape it lightly over items like teacups and rice cookers. Since Sashiko is made of bleached fabric, it has good absorbency and dries quickly, making it suitable for wiping dishes as well.

You can also customize Sashiko pieces into original accessories, or piece them together to create your desired size and use them as decorative cloths. The versatility of this traditional craft allows it to be celebrated both as an art form and as a functional textile.

  • Lay Sashiko cloths over trays, plates, or trivets to protect surfaces and add visual interest.
  • Repurpose faded Sashiko cloths as dust rags or cleaning cloths.

Accessorize:

  • Sew Sashiko pieces into tote bags, pouches, or other accessories for personal use.
  • Incorporate Sashiko stitching into clothing, like collars, cuffs, or pockets.
  • Create Sashiko-inspired appliques to iron or sew onto linens, bags, or garments.

Upcycle and Combine:

  • Piece together smaller Sashiko remnants into larger cloths, runners, or quilts.
  • Layer and stitch multiple Sashiko fabrics to create dimensional textiles.
  • Use faded Sashiko as a base for additional embroidery or applique embellishments.

The versatility of Sashiko allows it to be celebrated both as a decorative art and a functional textile in the home. The key is to embrace the character and imperfections that make each Sashiko piece unique.

About the Unique Titles of the Cloths

Each vibrant Sashiko dishcloth produced by 'Kohbo Rainbow and Dream' is thoughtfully titled by Ms. Yuko Hori, one of the organization's dedicated participants. Hori has been captivated by picture books since childhood, and began writing poetry from a young age. This passion for words and creativity has made her the perfect person to imbue each textile with a unique title.

Hori draws inspiration directly from the color palettes and patterns of the Sashiko stitching, translating the imagery that springs to mind into the perfect words to accompany each piece.

To date, she has titled over 1,000 dishcloths - an impressive feat that has become a cherished hallmark of the 'Rainbow and Dream' Sashiko collection.
