“Roaring Forties Lamb is a unique Australian product, and the closest thing I have tasted to the highly prized ‘L’agneau de pré-salé’ from Normandy in France.

The meat is tender and flavoursome, with a very special, lightly herbaceous background taste. It represents the very finest lamb from Australia”

Jacques Reymond, Jacques Reymond Restaurant, Melbourne

There is a reason why Michelin-starred chefs choose Roaring Forties's grass-fed lamb.

The “Roaring Forties” are named after the ferocious winds that circle the southern hemisphere at the 40th degrees of latitude.

Distant oceanic storms and swells that push up from Antarctica give rise to regular and strong westerly winds.

Blowing over thousands of kilometres of southern ocean, these famous trade winds carry the cleanest air in the world – as measured by the CSIRO monitoring station at Cape Grim.

With the climate tempered by the regular climate that the winds bring, the fertile lands of Southern Victoria and Tasmania provide green grass – year round.

It is one of the most ideal regions in the world to grow premium lamb.

Roaring Forties Grass Fed Lamb - location

All Roaring Forties Lambs are hand-selected and graded against 9 separate, stringent criteria.

Each lamb must be checked off by 2 highly skilled senior graders before making the cut. Less than 20% of all lambs reach the quality specifications laid out within the program. It truly one of the most rigorous grading schemes for lamb in the world, and results in consistency and quality like no other.

The product is produced at third generation family abattoir M.C Herd in Geelong, Victoria. It is ideally located to minimize transportation times for animals throughout the Roaring Forties sourcing regions, and for quick access to the main distribution terminals in Melbourne.

The plant is fully export accredited with AQIS and BRC certification, and all lambs processed conform to Halal standards.

Roaring Forties Lamb - Master Craftsmen

Many of the farmers in Tasmania and Southern Victoria have lived there for generations.

Knowledge of the land, the environment, and perfected lamb breeding techniques have been handed down from father to son time and time again.

They truly are masters of their craft – and completely in tune and at harmony with their environment.

The understanding, respect, and affection that they have for the special lambs that they raise is key to the end product being one of the best in the world.

The 3 keys to quality

AIR

The wild winds of Bass Strait – known as the “Roaring Forties” whip over the lush pastures of Tasmania and Southern Victoria. So strong are these gales that the trees near the coast grow on an angle away from the wind.

The cleanest air in the world is carried by these winds – purifying the landscape – one that is free from pollution and foreign matter.

WATER

Large antarctic swells magnify in Bass Strait, often creating ferocious and wild conditions.

This stretch of ocean is one of the most famous and legendary in the world.

Trace ocean elements and minerals are released from the stormy waves, and carried over the coastal pastures by the strong gales of of the Roaring Forties.

LAND

The farming land found in Tasmania and Southern Victoria, where our Roaring Forties Lambs are grown, is some of the most nutrient rich, and well managed pastures anywhere in the world.

Combined with the temperate climate that the sea brings, it makes this region perfect for growing grass and fodder crops year round – a feat rarely matched by any other region in the world.
